UK bees & beekeepers infographic

Here’s a quick go I had at producing an infographic using the free infographic creation website Piktochart. I was trying to present a few figures that give a quick overview of the UK’s bees and beekeepers – without including so many that it becomes overwhelming. I found most of the numbers via the House of Commons Library debate pack – The UK bee population.

If you can think of ways I can improve it from a design point of view, or better figures to include, please let me know! It’s impossible to be sure of the total number of bees or indeed beekeepers here. Membership of an Association and registration on Beebase is not compulsory and it’s also possible to be a member of an Association without keeping bees.

EDIT: Based on feedback I have added some figures for the Bee Farmers’ Association and Scottish Beekeepers Association members, to make it more representative of the UK. Membership figures were taken from the latest figures available on each Association website, apart from the SBA who sent me figures directly. The Bee Farmers’ Association has a nice interactive Location map of members – it’s fascinating to see how widely spread they are.

About Emily Scott

I am a UK beekeeper who has recently moved from London to windswept, wet Cornwall. I first started keeping bees in the Ealing Beekeepers Association’s local apiary in 2008, when I created this blog as a record for myself of my various beekeeping related disasters and - hopefully! - future successes.

How cool, Emily. The colors for number of beekeepers and colonies are pretty close to each other, wonder if these could be more distinct. Only other comment is you could consider a call to action or other “what to do” at the end to promote pollinators and beekeeping.

Really nice idea and like how you distilled it down to some key facts.

The colours thing on the chart bothered me too, I spent ages trying to find a way to contrast the colours more but it wouldn’t let me! Good idea about a call to action, so that people have some tips to help bees. Perhaps I will produce a second infographic covering that theme…

It is interesting to see that beekeepers and bees have increased, all the publicity has worked. Habitat destruction is a problem for all wildlife. I like your header picture with the Queen bee and her attendants.

Hi Emily – I hope you are well and enjoying life in the South West – did you get any bees? i have a fantastic contact for really good bees in North Somerset.

Thanks for this, i couldn’t see if you have included members of the Bee Farmers Association, some 350 members and between them they manage many 1000s of colonies – i could possibly get the precise figures for you.

Hi Simon, I haven’t organised any bees yet, must investigate further soon! It has been so busy here with moving into a new place in November and then Christmas and a small toddler who’s always on the go. Presumably your contact wouldn’t deliver bees to Cornwall? But if you have their details I could ask.

Great point about the Bee Farmers Association, I must update the infographic to include their members! Their website says they have around 450.
